Pedestrian Killed in Traffic Crash

A pedestrian who was struck and critically injured Tuesday while trying to cross 22nd Avenue South near 49th Street South has died.

Shortly after 9 a.m. on Feb. 3, Robert Smith, 45, of St. Petersburg was walking between vehicles stopped at a traffic signal in the 4800 block of 22nd Avenue South. Smith was not crossing at a marked crosswalk.

The driver of a gray Jeep heading west on 22nd Avenue South hit Smith. The driver stopped immediately and remained at the scene.

Smith was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died from his injuries at the hospital on Tuesday night. His family has been notified.

The investigation continues.
