On April 22, 2026, at approximately 10:40 p.m., two women were walking in the downtown area in front of the open-air post office located at 76 4th Street North, when Rodrigo Romero, 18, 5744 Calais Blvd North, attacked them with a table knife.

One victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries to her head as a result of the attack. The second victim did not suffer any injuries during the incident.

Bystanders in the area assisted by calling law enforcement and detaining the suspect until officers arrived on scene.

Romero was arrested and charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.

The victims and the suspect are not known to each other.

The suspect was transported to Bayfront Health for evaluation. After being treated and released, he was transported to the Pinellas County Jail.
