A program to support teens and reduce violence is gaining a strong following at the Jordan Park Apartment community in St. Petersburg. The upcoming session will be Saturday, May 24th, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., 1245 Jordan Park Street South. Media are welcome.
The St. Petersburg Police Department received a $35,000 grant from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to fund the Youth Champions program to assist youth exposed to violence and give them a safe space for healing.
The once-a-month Saturday sessions include youth yoga and discussions with licensed mental health providers. Police officers also interact with the kids at each session to improve relationships and the perception of law enforcement.
The sessions began in February, and a graduation celebration will take place on June 28th.
